Shamrock Shake History

Did you know the original shamrock shake was created in 1967! By a man named Hal Rosen, a Connecticut McDonald’s owner. He made the delicious mint shake in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day, the shake debuted nationally in 1970 and was an instant success across the United States.

The Original shamrock shake had lemon/lime flavor, lemon/lime sherbet, vanilla ice cream, and vanilla syrup. By 1973 the shake became just a green colored vanilla shake.

You can still buy these shakes at McDonald restaurants during the months of February and March in the United States, Canada, and parts of Ireland.

Non-Alcoholic Version

If you have kids or have guests that don’t drink, consider making some non-alcoholic shamrock shakes. The original shamrock shakes you can buy at McDonald’s don’t include alcohol so you will make that version instead.

To make this shamrock shake recipe non-alcoholic, simply omit your Irish cream and whiskey.

Consider adding vanilla ice cream as well to add more flavor and make your milkshakes extra thick. Make sure you still include all your fancy toppings: Whipped cream, maraschino cherries, chocolate pieces, and fun sprinkles! If you are lucky enough to find some st. Patrick’s day sprinkles for sure use those! You can also use just regular green sprinkles or gold ones!

Set up a fun little station for everyone to top their own drink.
