Grapefruit Medication Interactions
If you are taking any medications, you may want to make sure the grapefruit won’t interact with them before consuming these drinks. According to research from CMAJ, there are more than 85 medications that can interact with the fruit. The list of drugs found to interact include anti-cancer agents, anti-nausea pills, anti-infection drugs, and especially anti-depressant medication.
Basically, grapefruit, grapefruit juice, and other citrus fruits contain something called furanocoumarins. This is a type of chemical that effects the metabolism of the drug you are taking which effects the enzyme our body uses to break down antidepressants.
Drinking or eating in small amounts will not cause devastating results, however, too much of a good thing can be a bad thing.
