One Tequila…..Two Tequila……Three Tequila…..Floor! Well, that’s how the saying goes anyway. Tequila is pretty strong alcohol, so it’s important to drink in moderation. I am quite the fan of a good Orange Tequila Sunrise Cocktail, but as with any alcohol, I have to know my limit.
Why Does Tequila Make You Crazy?
Tequila like all alcoholic beverages contains the intoxicating ingredient: ethanol. No matter what alcoholic beverage you drink, the alcohol is molecularly identical and affects your brain in the same way. But, why is there so many sayings about tequila?!
Ethanol: This intoxicating ingredient is a central nervous system depressant which is why you tend to feel sleepy when you drink alcohol in smaller doses.
Tequila is distilled from sugars of the agave plant which gives it a different makeup of congeners than other alcohols. But, even that doesn’t affect how your body reacts to it as this different makeup only affects the taste.
In reality, it’s not Tequila that is to blame for its crazy effects, but how much you consume and the situation you are in. Tequila has 40% ethanol whereas other alcohols like wine only contain 12%. So, you need to drink way less tequila if you don’t want to get a little crazy.
In our culture, tequila is known for a great party and has earned a reputation for making any night a wild ride! This is because tequila is usually consumed via shots. The quicker you drink, the quicker your blood alcohol concentration will increase. So, shots of tequila will get you drunk faster.
Along with shots, tequila is mixed with sugary juices. The super sugary mixers spike your glucose levels giving you energy and intoxication. Once you are intoxicated, your ability to understand your limit decreases drastically. Damn that Tequila!
How to Avoid a Crazy Night with Tequila
If you are like me and like Tequila but don’t want to have “one of those nights, there are a few things you can do to prevent it.
- Drink quality tequila that is distilled from 100% agave.
- Sip your drink alone or with a mixer instead of taking shots.
- Keep your mindset right. If you go into it thinking you’re going to get super drunk, well, you probably will.
So, take it slow with this Orange Tequila Sunrise Cocktail so you don’t have “one of those nights.”
